Degas Sikorski, Target Of Homophobic Slur, Gets Belated Valentine Message From PM Trudeau

"Know that your friends outnumber the haters by the millions."

An Edmonton man who received a homophobic message at work for Valentine's Day received a very different message Saturday.

"Know that your friends outnumber the haters by the millions, and I am one of those friends," wrote Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in a card for Degas Sikorski. The belated valentine, signed by many members of Parliament, was given to Sikorski by his local Member of Parliament Randy Boissonnault at a brunch meeting.

Sikorski went into work at a Party City store on Valentine's Day after more than a month without shifts. When he got there, a supervisor had made gifts for all the staff — but his contained a shocking slur.

"FA**** YOU ARE NOT GETTING SHIFTS FOR A REASON," was written in black marker across Sikorski's valentine. Sikorski has been openly gay for several years.

"I am beyond livid," wrote his mother Shelley Bramhoff Sikorski on Facebook, who called on her network to spread the word about the incident. Degas no longer works for Party City.

Boissonnault, who is also gay, heard the story and wanted to find a way he and his colleagues could support the young man, according to Global News.

Trudeau said, "That’s not right. Let’s write that young man a message," Boissonnault said.

"It's amazing to know I have their support," Sikorski wrote on Facebook.
