Chair of the Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission, Pravesh Sharma

Chair of the Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission, Pravesh Sharma is questioning the Police whether the people who allegedly brutally assaulted a 19 year old member of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex community in Ba earlier this month, have been taken in for questioning.

While speaking on fijivillage Straight With Vijay Narayan, the Commission Chair says every person has a right to life under the Constitution and this cannot be taken away arbitrarily.

He says this is what happened to this poor 19 year old person who belonged to two vulnerable groups – one he was a member of the LGBTI community and two he was a sex worker.

Sharma is calling on the Police to investigate the 19 year old’s death, take the responsible people to court and not just sweep it under the carpet.

Following the comments by Police that medical authorities have said that the death of the 19-year-old has been cited as complications arising from his medical condition, Sharma questions why the brutal attack is not being raised as a serious issue.

When contacted by fijivillage News, Police say the investigation will be conducted regarding the claims of assault.

They say once more information is gathered, they will be in a better position to respond to the issues as the CID is continuing with their line of investigation.
