Tottenham 's LGBT+ fans' group Proud Lilywhites have issued a statement after the signing of PSG right-back Serge Aurier.

Spurs beat off competition from Manchester United for Aurier, who will cost around £23m.

The Ivory Coast international, who has signed a five-year deal and will wear the No.24 shirt, has been involved in several controversies, including for a homophobic rant.

In February last year, the 24-year-old was suspended by PSG for slurs against his coach Laurent Blanc and goalkeeper Salvatore Sirigu.

Aurier called Blanc “a faggot” and, when, asked if Blanc “sucks” Zlatan Ibrahimovic, he responded: “Yeah and he takes the ball with it. He takes everything.”

Asked which goalkeeper was better between Kevin Trapp and Salvatore Sirigu, he said: “Trapp, Sirigu is gay.”

But the Proud Lilywhites, formed in 2014 to challenge discrimination, are willing to give Aurier a chance to mend his ways.

In a statement, co-chairs Chris Paouros and Simon Gray wrote: "What happens when players such as Serge Aurier who have been openly homophobic in the past join a new club and have a fresh start?

"...this is a journey – we don’t want to recriminate.

"One of our main tools for change is education, so we’d like to see engagement with LGBT+ fans is at the top of Serge’s list.

"We all love this game and we want to win matches and trophies, but not at any cost.

"Homophobic language, when unchallenged, can have consequences: we have to be the change we want to see.

"Making change, player by player, even fan by fan if necessary, is why we’re here and we won’t rest until we’ve done it.

"Welcome to the famous Tottenham Hotspur Serge, we look forward to you getting to know us."

Aurier himself released a statement vowing to clean up his act and make 'the diverse Spurs fanbase proud'.

He said: "This is a huge and exciting opportunity at a massive football club and I am determined to prove myself as a professional both on and off the pitch

"This is a fresh start for me and I will do everything to make the Spurs fanbase, which is huge and diverse, proud of me.

‘The fans are the most important people at any club and I am looking forward to showing them and everyone at Spurs the real Serge Aurier."
