Fallen officers honored for National Peace Officer Memorial Day
FOND DU LAC, Wis. (WBAY) - Four Fond du Lac police officers and one Wisconsin State Trooper are being honor at Hamilton Park today for Peace Officers Memorial Day.
Families and representatives of these five members of law enforcement who made the ultimate sacrifice for their community are keeping their legacy alive as part of the week long even called “National Police Week.”
“There is no way you can fully understand, unless you’ve gone through it yourself,” said Gay Birkholz, fallen Fond du Lac law enforcement member Craig Birholz’s mother.
This day was created to honor officers by John F Kennedy back in 1962. Taking a moment to remember the federal, state, and local officers who’ve died in the line of duty. Giving people the chance to come together and support each other during this tough time, like Fond du Lac Police Chief Aaron Goldstein.
“I’ve watched the impact through family, friends, loved ones, and also community. This community just continues unify and come together,” said Chief Goldstein.
However, at the center of it all are the people who’ve been impacted the most, the families.
Laying a rose down at the memorial for their son, like Birkholz, who says the support she’s received has meant the world after losing a significant piece of her heart.
“Losing a son... I can’t... it’s been difficult,” said Birkholz. “I try and find hope. Again, help others has been healing for me.”
